Paul Lynch -- Oh So Quiet

After releasing his Searching for the Answer EP in February 2018, Lynch took six months away from music to contemplate his next move in life. After deciding to go part-time in his job as a Civil Engineer to fully focus on his musical solo project. He then set about recording his new songs, and the culmination is the exciting new collection of songs that he has planned for 2019. After the successful release of his first single of this year; A Different Way (released on 8th March), the sunny month of May brings Oh So Quiet, and the abundance of excitement that accompanies it.

An indie-folk artist hailing from the big wide city of London, Paul is heavily influenced by the likes of Elbow, The Flaming Lips, and John Grant. With his versatile voice delivering both power and delicacy, his varied songwriting comes to life. His lyrics provide a witty and honest take on real life situations, and that combined with his charming and dramatic stage persona make for captivating live shows.

Having returned rejuvenated from his travels throughout Mexico and France, Paul Lynch has uncovered his second single out of a collection of five songs; planned to be released over the course of this year. His respective travels through Mexico and France have returned him with new outlooks and inspirations; where the regions music have had a profound effect on his songs. Drifting further from his indie-folk roots, Paul is now embarking on a new adventure through a jungle of Latin rhythms and poetically classical vocals, whilst still gripping quite firmly onto the folky balladry that we’ve come to know and love.

With a similar style to the likes of Moses Sumney and The Ages, Lynch manages to tell a complicated story within Oh So Quiet in an equally complicated shell. The song itself is gently poetic, with unusual melodic intricacies; blending a plethora of genres into a lyrically ambiguous yet upbeat and hopeful tune.

The song starts with a transcendent melody on guitar; gentle in nature yet grabbing your attention instantly. With a crescendo of cymbals, Paul’s voice is introduced, bringing us swiftly into a samba-like rhythm that will become oh so familiar as the song progresses. If you listen carefully, you can hear pleasant synth chords etched into the surface; an unusual choice for a track of this calibre. It blends perfectly with Paul’s delicate vocals, accompanying the syncopated drums beat and chords provided by the guitar. The control in his voice is hypnotic; joined with faint harmonies that sweep over the instrumental components, altogether creating a melodically odd yet sonorous and rich tune.
